Regarded as the most accurate English translation of the Latin Vulgate even in our days. It was initially translated by members of the English College in Douay, France from 1582 to 1610. Much of the text employed a densely Latinate vocabulary, being regarded as extremely difficult to read. Consequently, this translation was revised between 1749 and 1777 by Bishop Richard Challoner. The purpose of Douay Rheims is to uphold Catholic tradition in the face of the Protestant Reformation. It was an effort by English Catholics to support the Counter-Reformation .
